오늘은 소유격을 나타내는 ' (apostrophe)에 대해 알아볼 예정!
1. 생략된 글자나 숫자를 대신함
do not → don't
2024 → '24
2. 소유격을 나타냄
Sam's watch
the horses' tails
3. 글자나 숫자의 복수를 나타냄
How many 3's are there in 9? : 9에는 3이 몇 개?
There are two m's in comma. : m이 2개
seven 0's : 0이 7개
일반적으로 단어 끝에 's를 붙여 소유격을 나타내는 것은 알지만
항상 아리송한 부분이 있었다.
s로 끝나는 단어에는 어떻게 써야할까?
어디에선 단어 끝에 '만 붙이고, 또 어디에선 's라고 써있고...
✔ 단수 명사인데 s로 끝나는 경우 👉 's 또는 ' 둘 다 가능
Ms. Doss's car / Ms. Doss' car
Jesus's hand / Jesus' hand
Johns의 수업 → Ms.Johns's class / Ms.Johns' class
controversial point. 둘 다 가능하지만 전자('s)가 관례적이라 권한다고 하는 글을 봄
